A NEW report predicts Cairns will grow to a city of up to 460,000 people by 2050 – outstripping Townsville and Darwin – and should be recognised as the capital of Northern Australia.The figures based on historical growth will be used by the Cairns Regional Council to pressure federal and state governments to fund crucial infrastructure and other needs.The report projects Cairns having between 400,000 and 460,000 people by 2050 compared to 330,000-400,000 for Townsville, 260,000-400,000 in Darwin, 180,000-220,000 people for Mackay and 210,000-240,000 for Rockhampton and Gladstone.The report by Bill Cummings of Cummings Economics bases the projections on historical data between 1976-2011.Figures after 2011 are now based on boundaries changed by the Australian Bureau of Statistics.It shows in the 35 years from 1976 the city of Cairns grew by 182 per cent (2.9 per cent per year) from 51,990 to 146,477 compared to Townsville (85 per cent, 90,540 to 167,636), Darwin (173 per cent, 47,300-129,106), and Mackay (105 per cent, 40,750-83,350).Cr Manning said governments used Office of Economic and Statistical Research figures which underrated population growth with its prediction for Cairns of 316,719 people by 2046.“We are the shining star but we are not being backed as a shining star,” he said.“It’s time we got recognised on the state and national stage or will we be strangled or our growth limited? x���KOA���|�T�{�B�UJ�B�B4'���o_�$�dY���l�;�[��{`����3������9��C������(�Ѣf�02�~�n?��xt0�v>D�f�ǣt��0>0�\y��N�=��ța���忓�讂�7�}���_�#8>?�$���P�
