ju dou film analysis

Country: China. Although the film, like the preceding Codename: Cougar (Daihao Meizhoubao, 1989), is listed as co-directed by both Zhang and Yang Fenglian, this work has the earmarks of Zhang’s strikingly expressionistic visual artistry. It is notable for being printed in vivid Technicolor long after the process had been abandoned in the United States. A woman married to the brutal and infertile owner of a dye mill in rural China conceives a boy with her husband's nephew but is forced to raise her son as her husband's heir without revealing his parentage in this circular tragedy. Written: Liu Heng. Ju Dou is a 1990 film from mainland China, directed by Zhang Yimou and Yang Fengliang, starring Gong Li.. China, 1920s—although by the look of the rural village that is the film's setting it could just as easily be the 1720s or 1520s.

But long before the gory finale, the Chinese censors had apparently already decided to suppress this film, which was directed by a young turk named Why did the Chinese film establishment find "Ju Dou" so offensive? The film was banned for a few years in China, but the ban has since been lifted.Soon, the two are unable to control their passion any longer and engage in sex.

He is sadistic and impotent, and entertains himself by tormenting his bride while the nephew listens in the middle of the night.

This story of miserable lives is hard-hitting, as traditions are uprooted and power dynamics abruptly shift. In 1975, he won the Pulitzer Prize for distinguished criticism. Jinshan continues to influence the life of the child he named Tianbai and when the child calls Jinshan "Father," Jinshan accepts this as psychological revenge on his wife and nephew.

First, because of its unabashed, lurid melodrama, in which the days are filled with scheming and the nights with passion and violence.

In Ju Dou, the three main male characters are Yang Jinshan (Li Wei), the old and infertile husband and owner of the dye mill, Yang Tianqing (Li Baotian), his adopted middle-aged nephew and Ju Dou’s lover, and Yang Tianbai (Zheng Ji’an), Ju Dou’s son. Not that this story would have been very easily set to music.Roger Ebert was the film critic of the Chicago Sun-Times from 1967 until his death in 2013. Ju Dou (1990), Zhang Yimou’s third directorial outing, is, to my mind, not only his breakthrough film but also a work that ranks at the top of his cinematic oeuvre. Ju Dou is a quiet film, emphasising the simplistic nature of the text; a story to feel, not to think about. One day, Jinshan falls into the dye vat and drowns and a funeral is held for him.

But within the rigid Chinese feudal society depicted by "Ju Dou," that is not quite the case. Ju Dou, becomes the object of sympathy right from the start. Ju Dou (菊豆)Director: Zhang Yimou, Yang Fengliang. Their deception becomes even more dangerous when the child grows old enough to understand what is going on; ironically, he resembles the sour merchant more than the lusty young man who fathered him.The ending of "Ju Dou" is as lurid and melodramatic as anything conceived by Poe or filmed by Bunuel, and it exhibits justice completely untempered by mercy. Knowing that society would never accept her infidelity, Ju Dou goes to a nunnery to terminate another pregnancy. After Ju Dou tells him the child is not his, he attempts to kill the child and burn down the house. The movie, which is set in the 1920s but might as well be set a century earlier, tells the story of a wealthy old textile man who marries a juicy young bride and hires a desperate young nephew and enslaves both of them with his cruel will. The old man owns a factory where he dips bolts of cloth in great vats of bright dyes, and then hangs them on long poles to dry.

The cloth is bold and brilliant, the colors of passion, but nothing to compare to the emotional tumult taking place beneath the old villain's roof. Sex, it is said, is the only luxury with which the poor are as well supplied as the rich. It is tempting for us to read it as a political parable, to see the old merchant as an example of the old order of Maoism, and the hateful boy as a symbol of the Red Guard. Directed by Yimou Zhang, Fengliang Yang. When Ju Dou discovers she is pregnant with Tianqing's child, she and Tianqing pretend that the child is Jinshan's. Set in 1920’s China and featuring Gong Li as a young woman who is purchased as a wife for a wealthy merchant, Ju Dou has many similarities to Zhang Yimou’s greater film, Raise The Red Lantern which would follow it a year later in 1991. With Li Gong, Wei Li, Baotian Li, Ma Chong. Jinshan suffers a stroke that leaves him paralyzed from the waist down.
Ju Dou (Chinese: 菊豆; pinyin: Jú Dòu) is a 1990 film directed by Zhang Yimou and Yang Fengliang (though it is almost universally considered to be a product of Zhang's vision as director) [citation needed] and starring Gong Li as the title character.
