The story is about a Phantom of opera who's really a vampire, and how he meets a pretty young singer, the Phantom. I do not understand why the critics were so harsh on the film. Included in the extras is a good Making Of. I think if you disregard the book entirely, Hammer makes a solid film.The least "Phantom of the Opera" version of "Phantom of the Opera" there is! Absolutely riveting version of this well known tale. Broadway composer Andrew Lloyd Webber has been streaming all of his filmed stage musicals for free throughout the ongoing health crisis and the latest one is The Phantom of the Opera! I really can't say much about the musical because I haven't seen the show but I really hope that they do a musical film. The masked man's obsession with the beautiful Christine (Sierra Bogess) grows. This looks like it was upscaled from the DVD release, which itself was taken directly from the VHS (I can even see colour correction issues I haven't seen since my VHS collection days). Then I remembered the names of the stars and looked though internet and found the production on a DVD.
I think that this is the type of movie that you would watch over and over again. I think it is also a good movie because it is not just a musical but it is a story about a singing-type of story. Remains a very entertaining film and don't let the moaners about the blu ray image quality put you off. The actors were great, and the music was awesome. A huge mistake. I did not expect it to be that good and I did not expect to like it as much as I did. The film is just so "over the top" it just seemed silly. I found it very informative and I don't normally go for extras. There is an interesting "extra" "The Making of" intro'd and narrated by Edward de Souza, with interviews and clips from previous Phantom and Hammer films.

Even his hands looks badly burned. I finally did and I can't wait to see it again. It was very exciting, thrilling, and creative. love this film!! In the first two the Phantom worked solo and in this one he as an assistant who unknowingly or knowingly does his dirty work for him.
This was the third Phantom of the Opera movie and the first one made in the United Kingdom. I think it is believable for those of us who have seen it.

The DVD is full of vibrant colour, showing the sets and props (which are excellent) at their best, which for Hammer is almost a given. The actors were great, and the story is great. I would definitely recommend this movie to anyone who loves musicals, or just anyone who likes a good movie. The costumes are simply stunning. It was so much fun to watch and I would like to see it again. The Phantom is in love with the young singer, but when she gets infected, she becomes the true Phantom, and she is captured by the vampire. The one follows closely to the 1943 Claude Rains version. At the Opera of Paris, a mysterious phantom threatens a famous lyric singer, Carlotta and thus forces her to give up her role (Marguerite in Faust) for unknown Christine Daae.
I have this film on video {somewhere!} The characters were real and believable and the music was just beautiful. PQ is ok in 10.80p,1.85, 16.9. i think the picture on the blu ray is only as good as the print that the company was given to them, maybe this is the best we will ever see. The acting is superb. A must see for any traditional horror fan! stealing composer Petries work, and putting his own name to it.Petrie breaks into the printing office and starts a fire accidentally.but when trying to put the fire out picks up a jar thinking it is water, but is acid, and gets splashed by it.leading him to suffer in agony, and running ending up in the thames river drowned, or is he, Herbert Lom is very good in the role of Petrie, you feel sorry for what has happened to him in the story, phantom has a great supporting cast Edward de Souza, Heather Sears,and Thorley Walters. I think people will love it because it's a musical and people love to see musicals. It is a musical, and a musical like none that I've ever seen. And for those who like to watch the film alone in a theatre.
