My group is made up of 6 level 9 characters slated to fight a great undead warrior/caster by the end of the campaign, and i was looking at KFC for an aproppriately hard fight. It is colored purple which means it it should be a medium encounter. Especially with 2 players starting from level 1. Additionally, you can add NPCs and other things to make a fight adjustable on the fly. You might also check out I was suspicious out the difficulty level, so I input the first encounter.
It's not the same fight to have 4 goblins go in one-by-one instead of all at once. It boils down to luck since most players will go down in 1 or 2 hits and so will the enemies.
Apparently a CR17 Death Knight is only a medium? Bad idea? I would suggest using the same number of enemies as players for initial fights to make it fairly even. Dungeon Masters mainly use it as an apparatus to enable flatter and more balanced fight. If you ever find yourself in southern Sweden, I owe you a beer or whatever. Now it is hard to balance things. If the players roll well, a "deadly" encounter could be over almost instantly.As an alternative to balancing the encounter I thought about giving the players extra HP, and if needed drop the +2 modifier on the goblins damage.
