I just couldn't take it seriously, whether it was intentional or not, the script was a mess and laughable and the scares weren't effective enough as they could have been. The gore scenes do stretch way too long in some instances, especially the tarantula scene, and the characters are no good, but everything else made this film a classic cult film. The make up and special effects were the best I've seen, the acid pouring scene for example, was the most disturbing thing I've ever seen.
