And my journey of shock and discovery was well underway.I have made television documentaries for 15 years, but "Blackfish" is my second feature documentary and my first one to have found theatrical distribution. Part of it is just building trust. In 2002, Keiko spent five weeks journeying across the Atlantic to Norway. "Blackfish" filmmaker Gabriela Cowperthwaite decided to make the documentary after taking her kids to SeaWorld. The early deaths, the grieving, the boredom, the daily fighting and the attacks -- what we learned over two years is impossible to shake.
They were the ones who took it to the top at the United States government and said, “Let’s ban this in U.S. waters.” It was really that event that spun that off. At that point, however, I had already began peeling back the onion. But as I said before, I really had to know who I was. There were like 50. We also bought unused footage. One of them. SeaWorld is a $2 billion a year entity, and they'll do anything to protect their greatest asset: Shamu. Filmmaker Gabriela Cowperthwaite was curious about killer whale performances – think Shamu at SeaWorld – and began to do research. How could our entire collective childhood memories of this delightful water park be so morbidly wrong?

My past films are sort of slightly more touchy feely and inspiring, so I expected they would look at this as an opportunity to tell me what they do, why so many people are enchanted by these shows, and why they’re a $2 billion industry. We advocate, instead, for captive killer whales to be retired into sea sanctuaries where they can live out the rest of their lives in a dignified, sustainable manner. At the same time you can’t prescribe how people will react or feel. I don't know if it will change the way you feel about animals in entertainment parks. They put their asses on the line for this so I wanted to do them justice. I don’t know where that will be and I’m going to wait and see what feels like an appropriate fit for a filmmaker-storyteller and a mom who took her kids to SeaWorld. When I started peeling back the onion, I figured there had to be more to this story: Was [the whale] playing with her? I found his name from one of my researchers. They were crying, hooting and hollering. I’m a little unclear if they thought they were misrepresented. In fact, that’s the first thing that people say when I tell them about the film that I made. The trainers have. The conclusions were shocking, and a sad testament to the interaction between people and their fellow travelers in the animal kingdom. I know that killer whales are not suitable for captivity.

Cowperthwaite, 45, began working on “Blackfish” in 2010 following the death of Dawn Brancheau, a SeaWorld trainer who was dragged underwater to her death by an orca. It really is the power of marketing or spin that lets you hold onto that strange little fact about the ponytail that has since been disproven. Was he angry? I remember asking someone why an orca -- a highly intelligent animal -- would attack its trainer or essentially "bite the hand that feeds it." I do see myself as an even-handed person. I think that a $2 billion a year industry has things they can do that no one can do. However, in a sea sanctuary, where a large ocean cove is cordoned off with a net, we could monitor their health, even feed them if need be.
