So Mearls announced on Twatter that the next 5e book will be Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes, looks from the little that we know that it will be dedicated to the planes, which I think is cool. Seriously excited to see these guys back in the game.First up is the Mangler, which is a fantastic example of an ambusher that can still retain its threat. The nightwalker summons its choice of 1d6+6 shadows, 1d4+2 nightshade zombies or wraiths, or 1d2 dread specters. It is very difficult to chew through though with all of its resistances.Last but not least, my favorite category of monster (because who doesn’t love it when the monsters get that much more cosmic). The shadows remain for 1 hour, until the nightwalker dies, or until the nightwalker dismisses them as a bonus action. They had hinted at a planes release and I'm a fan of Planescape (as my avatar indicates).
There are a lot of monsters that work well together, which–as Jeremy Crawford likes to say–help emphasize the story of an encounter with solid mechanics.

And then there’s the Collapse Distance, which is both amazing as a control spell in its own right, but it can act as a cascading psychic damage if you teleport a hulk (or a target) into a nest of others and PCs. This is a CR5 creature that is especially nasty with its resistances to and immunities to more common energy-based attacks.

Plus it deals a respectful 4d6+3 psychic damage with a hit, but more importantly, it can cause clustered foes to attack themselves, burning both their reactions (painful) and hit points. The undead creature is ever eager to put its tactics and plans to the test itself, and takes part in battles in every possible occurrence save for those that the creature has determined are self-destructive.

Can be mastercrafted (Jeweler’s Tools) into an amulet or circlet that provides this benefit once per day as an action. No immediate use. But I am a 5e fanboy by grognard standards. While Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes is … Enlarge for more damage, and suddenly you’re dealing two attacks with an Enlarged King’s Knife every round with advantage–which can really help these Duergar punch up. He’s also got decent weapon damage which can be further improved when he Enlarges.The other half of the Duergar one-two punch. The shadows arrive in one round, acting as allies of the nightwalker and obeying its commands.
