I’m planning my first trip to Seoul but I’ll only be staying for 5 days.I’m looking for a lively area that would interest a younger crowd. Hongdae is situated right in front of Hongik University, best known in the country for its excellent fine-arts program, in the Mapo district of Seoul (gu is Korean for “district”, so this area is referred to as “Mapo-gu”). Why are you staying in both places?
Glad I did, as many are suggesting I avoid staying in that area.I'd suggest Hongdae, there's tons of cafes and shops and is very lively for younger people. We were planning to stay at Hongdea & Myeondong as well. When you’re in Hongdae, there are so many restaurants it’s hard to choose. The best shopping malls in Seoul attract shopping enthusiasts from all over the world. Closer to student's cafes and shops - not necessarily less expensive, but a place for yuppies.We just came back on the 26 Nov 2016.
I’ve never been to Seoul so I’m not really familiar with the areas.Myeongdong is Chinese group tourist hell, Hongdae is the best choice and given that you want a younger crowd Gangnam would be a second choice.Thanks for the suggestion, was worried I was making the wrong choice with Myeongdong.Just curious, where do people find all the "stay in Myeongdong" recommendations? The area is lively with street market and hawkers until 11pm.Hongdae/Hongkik - My second preferred area. It is a place where many trends start and culture begins. The area was still busy all the time with lots of restaurants and cafes, and the hosts will cook you breakfast every morning if you’re into brunch.We stayed in makers hotel in insadong. The most crowded booking club in Hongdae, Green Light Party attracts crowds come rain or snow, weekday or weekend. I don’t really care if I’m closer to the historical sites or the more tourist-y attractions. It’s actually a pretty good alternative to Myeongdong when you want to go shopping. Hongdae is the collective term for the neighborhood surrounding Hongik University. I prefer, a place that’s full of shops, cafes and somewhere where it’s not dead at night.So far I’ve been in a bit of a dilemma on whether to stay in Myeong-dong or Hongdae.
